Newkirk Novak Announces New Lenexa Headquarters, Reimagines Lackman Library Building
Newkirk Novak Construction Partners will relocate its headquarters, remaining in Lenexa, the firm announced this week. The company is turning a page in its own story by transforming the Johnson County Lackman Library building into its home office, breathing new life into a cherished community landmark that closed its doors in 2019. The firm plans to occupy the space by the end of the year.
Founded in 2017, co-founders Lynn Newkirk and John Novak did not think more space would be required for the firm’s growing employee count until much later in the life of the company. Now at 62 employees, the company has outgrown its current 7,500 SF building in Lenexa. "This isn't just a move – it represents the next chapter for our company and a commitment to employees and our future growth as a local Kansas City contractor," says co-founder and owner Lynn Newkirk, "we're thrilled to continue serving clients and building strong, lasting partnerships in our community."
This move resonates deeply with Newkirk Novak's mission. With a focus on public sector construction, the purchase of the Lackman Library building symbolizes the firm's commitment to community-focused work. As Newkirk Novak searched for new space and the Lackman Library building was listed for sale, the alignment appeared meant to be. Owner John Novak says, “Like Johnson County Library, the purpose and vision of Newkirk Novak includes supporting partners in creating purposeful community spaces. Providing a reimagined learning environment as a place for our employees to connect with each other, our clients and be in the heart of the Lenexa community is something we’re incredibly excited about.”
Newkirk Novak has partnered with Multistudio on the design and is taking a hands-on approach by managing the build-out. Multistudio, formerly Gould Evans, designed the original Lackman Library that opened its doors in 1986. The team's vision for the modern library-turned-workplace focused on creating a space that:
- Reflects the company's innovative and entrepreneurial spirit
- Provides flexibility for future growth
- Celebrates chapters and partnerships through building materials
- Encourages a connected, collaborative culture
The 18,000 SF building offers more space and will provide an open-concept design that boasts natural light, featuring a clerestory that pays homage to the building's original architectural character. Employees will enjoy amenities including:
- A large training room
- Flexible collaborative spaces
- Multiple conference areas
- A break room featuring an outdoor patio
- A fully equipped workout gym
The company expects to complete the move by the end of 2024, marking an exciting new chapter in its story.
